Yorkshire was the largest county in England, located on the north eastern coast, the neighbouring coastal counties being Durham to the north by and Lincolnshire to the south. Historically it was divided into three administrative regions - the North, West and East Ridings. Historical records for the county reflect this division and are located in seperate archives so you will frequently need to know in which of the ridings your area of interest was located to find relevant records.
Industrialisation came to Yorkshire early, with the development of the textile, coal and steel industries, fuelling the population growth of many of the towns. The largest city in Yorkshire is Leeds, followed by Sheffield, Hull and Bradford.
