his list gives the names and street of residence of the inhabitants of Everton. Arranged alphabetically by surname, followed by first name or initials and/or title. Instead of the street name a reference number is given in the list next each name. The street which this number refers to can be found by viewing the PDF of additional information accessed by clicking on the additional info link below.
The list has been extracted from a history of Everton and no explanation is given regarding the inclusion criteria for the list, nor are occupations given. Certainly it does not contain a complete list of all residents. In 1821 the population of Everton was 2100. This list from 1830 contains only 527 names. The discrepancy is most likely explained by two factors:
1. That the list contains only the inhabitants of the most central part of the township and does not include the outlying areas
2. That the list contains only the more affluent and respectable members of the Everton community
It is likely that both factors are in operation, indeed the poorer inhabitants are more likely to reside on the outskirts of the town.
Now part of the Liverpool metropolis, Everton in 1830 was a small town on the north eastern border of the city of Liverpool. The town was in the parish of Walton-on-the-hill in the county of Lancashire. At the time of this list Everton was in the process of transformation from a rural town to an outlying suburb of Liverpool. A contemporary writer notes the recent settlement in the town of "labouring persons", residing on the borders and parts of Everton which are closest to or adjoining Liverpool. In the centre of the town itself however the author notes the increasing number of wealthy Liverpool merchants who have chosen Everton as a most desirable residence for themselves and their families.
