Taverns of Hertfordshire 1636
Period covered: from 1636 to 1636
World location: UK & Ireland
Country location(s): England
'Region' and/or city location(s): Hertfordshire
Town/locale:

This list of the tavern keepers of Hertfordshire has been extracted from a small topograhical volume on the home counties written by John Taylor and published in 1636. John Taylor was a poet and jobbing writer, formerly a waterman on the Thames with an intimate knowledge of the 'lower life' of London and the surrounding counties.

The volume contains architectural descriptions and historical incidents of interest and "a Relation of the Wine Taverns, wither by their signes, or names of the persons that allow, or keepe them, in, and throughout the said severall Shires." It is believed to be the earliest record of taverns in existence that gives the names of the tavern keepers and the location of the tavern.

This record set consist of just those pages from the volume relating to the taverns of Hertfordshire. The information given includes the name of the inkeeper (or licence holder) and the town location. Sometimes the name of the inn is also given. The text version used by the Genhound search engine contains only an index of the names. The PDF version should be viewed to obtain the full information.
