Now a borough in Greater Manchester, in 1818 Bolton was a large and thriving manufacturing town 11 miles north-west of Manchester in the county of Lancashire. Great Bolton and Little Bolton were two of the eighteen townships of the ecclesiastical parish of Bolton le Moors. These two townships were separated by the River Croal, with Little Bolton on the north side of the river and Great Bolton on the south side.
Bolton was known as a major centre for the cotton spinning industry in Britain, and also conatined a number of iron foundries. In the 1821 census the population of Great Bolton was given as 22,000, with an additional 9, 250 resident in Little Bolton.
Chowbent, was once a village but is now a part of the town of Atherton, located about 4.5 miles SW of Bolton, now part of the town of Atherton.
Leigh was a parish and a market town about 6 miles SW of Bolton. The parish contained six townships and the market town was composed of parts of the townships of Pennington and Westleigh. The townships in the parish were Pennington, Westleigh, Bedford, Astley, Tydelsey with Shackerley and Atherton, containing altogether around 40,000 inhabitants.
